Swimming is a great activity for all Australians as the majority of the population lives within 50km of the ocean. Children, even adults, should enroll in learn to swim classes as soon as possible to allow them to enjoy the benefits of swimming and to save themselves if necessary.
Most people enjoy swimming... some swim for fun in backyard pools, dams or the ocean, some swim for fitness, and some swim for speed...
But when I ask people “can you swim?”, the answer is mostly a resounding “yes!”
One day I took my training group to the beach for a water session. I was horrified that even though they said they could “swim”, they couldn’t swim well enough to save themselves or their children if they ever got into trouble.
You certainly don’t need to swim like an Olympian, but you DO need to swim well enough to be able to save yourself and others if you had to.
Many people who go to the pool to swim laps, swim up and down with no real plan in mind. It is difficult to achieve any goals if you don’t have a plan.
